Resume Skills Section: What to Keep and What to Cut

The skills section is the most-scanned and most-overstuffed part of most resumes. Done well, it gives the ATS the keyword matches it needs and gives a human reader a fast read of your depth. Done badly, it's a wall of buzzwords that adds nothing.

Group skills into categories

A flat list of forty skills looks unfocused. Group them: Languages, Frameworks, Cloud and Infrastructure, Data, Tools. Four to eight items per category is the right density. Order each group with the most relevant skill first.

Cut anything you can't defend

If you list it, you can be asked about it. Cut anything you touched once five years ago and never went back to. A trustworthy skills section is one where every entry maps to evidence somewhere else on the page.

Mirror the exact spelling in the posting

If the posting says "TypeScript" and your resume says "JS," the ATS scores it as a miss. Same for Postgres versus PostgreSQL, k8s versus Kubernetes. Match the casing and the full word the company uses. It feels finicky. It's also one of the cheapest wins available.
