Gaps

How to Handle Employment Gaps on Your Resume

Gaps are far less stigmatized than they were ten years ago, especially after 2020. The mistake isn't having a gap. The mistake is leaving it blank and letting the reader fill in the worst-case story.

Name the gap

Add a line item that frames the gap as intentional. "Career break, caregiving." "Sabbatical, independent study." "Career transition, full-time bootcamp." Naming the thing disarms most of the recruiter's concern before they form one.

Show structured activity

Even small things help. A course you finished. A freelance project. A certification. An open-source contribution. A gap with bullet points reads completely differently from a gap with nothing under it.

Don't over-explain in the cover letter

One sentence acknowledging the gap is enough. More than that reads as defensive. Move quickly to what you bring to the role you're applying for.
