Career-Change Resumes: Reframing Without Lying
Most career changers have more relevant experience than they think. They just describe it in the vocabulary of their old industry. Writing a career-change resume is mostly a translation problem.
Lead with what transfers
Restructure the top of the resume around the skills the new role asks for. A teacher moving into corporate L&D should lead with curriculum design, stakeholder management, and measurable learner outcomes, not eighth-grade Algebra.
Translate the language
A teacher who "managed differentiated instruction for 140 students" is also someone who "segmented an audience and tailored content for six learner cohorts." Same work, new vocabulary. The hiring manager's pattern-matching needs the words from their world.
Show some commitment to the move
A certification, a course, a small portfolio of freelance work in the new domain. Any of these signal that the transition isn't speculative. Even a modest portfolio meaningfully raises interview rates for career changers.
