How to List Freelance Work Without It Looking Like a Gap

Freelance work reads like a gap when it's described vaguely. The fix is to treat your freelance period as a single role with a portfolio of clients underneath it.

Treat freelance as one continuous role

List a single line item, either "Independent Consultant" or your LLC name, with the date range that covers the whole period. Under that role, list three to five engagements as sub-bullets with the client industry, the scope, and the outcome.

Use real client outcomes

Anonymize the client if needed. "Series B SaaS company in healthcare." "Mid-market e-commerce retailer." The outcome is what matters: what you shipped, what changed for them. Vague freelance bullets are the surest sign of thin experience.

Position it clearly

If you're applying for a full-time role and your freelance work matches it, that's a positive signal. Frame the period explicitly. "Two years independent consulting, now seeking a full-time role" reads cleanly. Leaving it ambiguous reads as job-hopping.
